The confidence cycle
Attempt โ small success โ confidence boost โ attempt harder skill โ more success โ growing confidence.
Break it: unsuccessful attempt โ embarrassment โ avoidance โ no practice โ more unsuccessful attempts โ confirmed belief "I can't do this."
Your job is to interrupt the break and restart the cycle.
The framework
Step 1: Identify the specific fear
"I can't shoot" or "I'm bad at defending" or "Everyone's better than me."
Specific is actionable. Vague ("I'm not good") is not.
Step 2: Find ONE thing they can do well
Maybe they can't score but they can pass accurately. Maybe they can't dribble but they can tackle. Find a genuine strength.
Step 3: Practice that strength in context
In a small-sided game, set it up so they get to use their strength. They pass accurately โ someone scores off their pass โ they feel useful โ confidence starts.
Step 4: Introduce the fear skill in low-pressure context
They want to shoot? Start with shooting into an empty goal. No defender. No pressure. Just technique. 10 reps, all successful. Now they've experienced success at the fear skill.
Step 5: Gradual pressure increase
Shooting at goal with a passive keeper (doesn't move). Shooting with a semi-active keeper. Shooting in a game-realistic scenario. Each step builds on the last.
Step 6: Celebrate the win, even if small
"You shot 5 times today and got 2 on target. That's progress from last week." Specific praise, measurable progress.
Timeline
This takes 4โ6 weeks of consistent work. If you expect confidence to build in 1 week, it won't. But 6 weeks of systematic practice almost always works.
What kills this process
Comparing to others: "Why can't you shoot like [other player]?" Creates shame, not confidence.
Pushing too hard: Introducing the fear skill in a match before they're ready. They fail publicly and confidence crashes.
Inconsistency: You work on it for 2 weeks, then stop. They don't get enough reps to build the neural pathway.
Impatience: The coach who says "you should be better by now" is wrong. Growth takes time.
